Interior Design Aesthetics: 22 Projects that Explore Trending Interior Styles

interior architecture and design

Both interior design and interior architecture can be creative and fulfilling careers. Interior designers focus more on the aesthetic side and interior architects on the technical, but there is a high degree of overlap between the two jobs. The interior design program leading to the Master of Interior Architecture (M. INT. ARCH.) degree is fully accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). Considered to be the highest level of accreditation within the field of interior design education, CIDA’s academic standards prepare students for entry-level interior design practice, and to apply for membership in professional interior design organizations.

Gocke Wyre emphasizes how important advocacy is in the field—to protect the general public and designers too. It’s important to understand how design impacts life and how interior designers fit into our ever-changing world. The workplace of an interior architect can be fast-paced and demanding, as they often work on multiple projects simultaneously and must meet tight deadlines.

Whether you are just starting out, or are a seasoned professional, UCLA Extension’s Architecture and Interior Design program can help develop your creative, technical, and professional skills while advancing your career.

The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), the oldest leading professional organization for interior designers in commercial and residential design, represents over 38,000 members. In conclusion, a degree in interior architecture can be a great choice if it aligns with your career aspirations, interests, and the factors mentioned above. It’s important to research and choose a program that is well-respected and fits your career goals. This conversion course is longer than a usual Master’s course and must be supplemented by internships. At postgraduate level, you can opt for a conversion course that specifically focuses on interior architecture (a list of examples is available here).

The instructors are all dedicated practicing professionals, the curriculum is CIDA-accredited and first rate, and the program is uniquely suited to the needs of those who can only attend part-time. Design is movement; it constantly evolves, which makes it an intrinsic factor to human growth. The UCLA Extension Architecture & Interior Design program truly paved my way to become an active contributor to this movement. The faculty—all active professionals in the field—taught me the language of design, which is now my most powerful tool of creative expression. For someone interested in incorporating contemporary interior design into their home, understanding the building blocks of the style is important. They choose suitable furniture, fabrics and fittings, but their job is not – as some people assume – just shopping for nice things!

You will effectively develop methods of representation and communication, and acquire new competences in a range of media necessary and appropriate to clearly illustrate design research and creative proposals in response to briefing material. On a practical level, interior architects tend to be involved in construction or renovation projects at an earlier stage than interior designers. The former provide input on structural matters, whereas the latter consider the appearance of an indoor space once it is built. People calling themselves interior architects after an undergraduate degree in Interior Architecture earn, on average, the same or slightly more than interior designers (see below for more information). But graduates of these courses should call themselves interior designers, not interior architects.

“An interior designer creates art that humans literally live, work, and play within,” he says. A graduate of Syracuse University, Jen moved to NYC and worked in Architecture and Interiors for 6+ years. She has spent a significant amount of her career bridging the gap between interior design and architectural core and shell to create a holistic design approach. With 11+ years of multifamily and high end residential architectural and interiors experience, her passion and skill sets lend her to be very strong at space planning and creating and designing spaces intentionally that are fluid and dynamic.

Tulane School of Architecture generates and applies knowledge that addresses urgent challenges of humankind by implementing innovative research and design in the built environment, focused on socially conscious and environmentally just models to inhabit the planet. We educate committed professionals to creatively manage complexity and transform the world through the practices of architecture, design, urbanism, historic preservation, sustainable real estate development, social innovation, and landscape architecture and engineering. However, the list of trending architectural styles omits aesthetics Archambault would’ve expected to see. This doesn’t just mean recycling materials or adapting old structures for new use, but often designing with the goal that the building helps the environment it exists within. “You can create surface treatments that enhance vegetation growth, we can reflect light to enhance certain types of growth, we can design water runoff systems that get filtered and then go back to the site,” he says. Despite not appearing on the list, he sees it among one the most notable “trends” in architectural design that will continue into 2024 and beyond.

In the United States, median annual wages of wage-and-salary architects were $70,320 in May 2008. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $41,320, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $119,220. Cities are now dense with such buildings, perhaps originally built as banks that are now restaurants, perhaps industrial mills that are now loft apartments, or even railway stations that have become art galleries. In each case the collective memory of the shape and character of the city is generally held to be more desirable than the possibility of a new building on the same site, although clearly economic forces apply.

The clearly structured and timetabled modules allow you to balance your on-campus time and your independent study where you can progress your ideas in a way that best suits your lifestyle. The graduate interiors program embraces diversity and aims to increase equity, both for interior design practitioners and for the people served by interiors projects. Interior design is uniquely equipped to advocate and promote diversity and equity in the profession and the built environment.

Although this style is often linked to architecture in countryside houses, it has recently found its way into urban contexts, promoting comfort and creating a an effortless look that feels raw, cozy, and trendy simultaneously. Excessive use of timber elements and white-washed finishes are the most characteristic of this style, along with mismatched fixtures; vintage sofas and antiques are complimented with contemporary chairs or textiles. There is formal ‘summative’ assessment as part of the module, usually towards the end of the module.

It also important to note that walking barefoot is a prominent cultural aspect of Asian households so choose flooring solutions should encourage doing so  without slipping. Other design features include the use of sliding doors, low rise platform beds and seating areas, screens, and partitions. Inspired by refurbished factories, particularly after the Industrial Revolution, the industrial style is identified by its bare and effortless philosophy of exposing architectural elements like pipes, brick, concrete wall surfaces, and beams.
